What is IPA?
Intelligent Process Automation (IPA) combines technologies including RPA, AI and machine learning to create an effective Digital Worker, which can take over many repetitive tasks from a number of employees. Where RPA achieves automation of basic tasks, IPA improves on this by integrating RPA with other technologies such as OCR and NLP, allowing a robotic worker to branch out into much more advanced tasks.
RPA Digital Workers
RPA-based Digital Workers are trained to replicate human interactions on a computer system, allowing them to get manual, repetitive and rule-based tasks done. RPA technology is efficient at doing trained, rule-based tasks, such as data entry, transacting on systems, filling forms or automated email population and sending. Tasks that require human judgment can then be given full attention by team members. This frees up countless hours that can be far better spent on trickier tasks that a robot cannot fill in for (yet). IPA improves on this by incorporating more advanced technologies that all then work in harmony.
IPA turns the RPA from simply being an automation of a rule-based task, to being a full-fledged Digital Workmate, capable of incorporating machine learning, AI and human attention into the automation flow.
Intelligent Processing of Invoices
Let’s say we have a number of invoices that need inputting into a system and categorising. An employee could painstakingly copy each document into the computer, one by one, and then sort through the newly created data to categorise it all. The entire process may take hours.
If we introduce RPA, a robot worker could take the data from the standard PDF or excel invoices and input it, with very little human interaction required, only to look at the exceptions and those that are not in easy-to-read form for the robot. This could cut the task down by a significant amount.
But if we further introduce IPA, a robot worker could take care of non-standard invoices such as scanned documents, correctly interpret the content and translate it into data, and then input it into the system. This allows the human worker to focus on exceptions and can save multiple business hours of time – and if this data input and categorisation is a regular task, hours turn into days’ worth of saved time, over the course of months and years.
IPA technology can be used in limitless ways across all kinds of industries, saving time and money – a lot of it.
